UT CD2 studs are unthreaded studs designed for capacitor discharge welding processes. This fastening method joins metal components directly to sheet metal or conductive surfaces without drilling the material, producing a fast, clean and strong joint.
UT is the designation for an unthreaded (plain) stud according to DIN EN ISO 13918, while CD2 is the classification commonly used in capacitor discharge welding systems. Both terms refer to the same type of plain stud prepared for CD welding.
Thanks to the speed of the process—approximately 2 to 3 milliseconds—UT CD2 studs are particularly suitable for thin sheet metal where thermal distortion and marks on the reverse side of the workpiece must be minimised.
Features of UT / CD2 studs
As an unthreaded stud, it is an ideal solution for applications requiring a simple, strong and permanent fastening. The low heat input of the process also makes it possible to work on thin sheet metal while minimising distortion and visible marks on the workpiece.
UT CD2 studs provide fast and accurate capacitor discharge welding.
They incorporate a calibrated ignition tip and a cold-formed flange that stabilise the electric arc during discharge and ensure a uniform joint with the base material.
The flange also plays a fundamental role during welding: it prevents arc displacement and increases the effective joining surface, thereby improving final mechanical strength and process repeatability.
